Specialized’s Next-Gen Demo Spotted: Near-Production Prototype Breaks Cover

At the Les Gets World Cup, Specialized’s long-rumored new Demo downhill bike finally shed its camouflage—revealing what appears to be a nearly production-ready machine.

After three years of prototype testing—including race-winning runs under Loïc Bruni—the latest iteration features a full carbon front triangle paired with aluminum chainstays. The design immediately stands out due to its unconventional drivetrain layout and oversized bottom bracket area.

The most striking detail is the crankset’s chainring placement, which sits offset from the crank arm. This has sparked speculation that the new Demo could be equipped with a gearbox system. Alternatively, it may use a mid-mounted gear system driving an external chainring—a design that offers greater freedom in tuning anti-squat behavior but may reduce ground clearance.

The suspension appears to follow Specialized’s UBB (Under Bottom Bracket) layout—a four-bar system with two short links connecting the front triangle and rear swingarm. One link sits just below the BB, working in tandem with a rocker link mounted inside the down tube to control shock progression.

While the exact kinematics remain unconfirmed, this prototype signals that Specialized is pushing hard on innovation for their next-generation DH race bike. With a clean, aggressive look and clear engineering ambition, the new Demo looks poised for production—and podiums—soon.
