As summer transitions into early autumn, Shanxi Province transforms into an ideal destination for cycling. The air turns crisp, the sky stretches wide and clear, and clouds drift across a blue canvas like brushstrokes in an oil painting. Sunlight spills into every corner of the ancient cities, casting a golden glow that invites cyclists to explore at their own pace.
Riding through the streets, dappled shadows from the trees form a natural canopy. The cool autumn breeze brushes against your skin, leaving you feeling refreshed and energized.
With such pleasant weather, a good bike ride has become an essential ritual for many to welcome the season. Across the province, there are numerous scenic routes perfect for cycling. Here are some of the most recommended ones to try, paired with your favorite riding playlist.
Scenic Bike Routes
📍 Taiyuan Riverside Bike Path
Stretching along both banks of the Fen River, this dedicated bike lane runs from the Shanglan Manhui Bridge in the north to a point 2 km south of Yingbin Bridge, covering a total length of 75 kilometers. It stands out as one of the few riverside paths in the country that extends over 50 km.
Access points are conveniently located at major intersections, complete with bike parking and rental stations. Whether you bring your own bicycle or pick up a shared bike, you can easily start your journey. The brightly colored pavement instantly lifts your mood, and as you ride, you’re flanked by Fenhe Park and the tree-lined Binhe East and West Roads. Above, willow branches sway in the cool breeze; below, flowers bloom in vibrant colors. It’s easy to forget you’re still in the city.
The path blends seamlessly into the scenery. Sunlight glitters on the river’s surface, and cyclists radiate energy. As you pedal, you become part of the landscape—a moving portrait of harmony between people and nature.
📍 Linfen Fenhe Park Route
Linfen Fenhe Park lies along the Fen River, bordered by the historic “Woniu Ancient City” to the east and the modern Hexi New Town to the west. To the north lies Hongtong, known for its cultural heritage, and to the south, Xiangfen, the region’s ancestral heartland.
While there’s no dedicated bike lane, most paths inside the park are bike-friendly, with good facilities. Fifteen public bike stations offer 300 bicycles for rent, and obtaining a rental card is quick and easy.
Cycling here brings you closer to the water than in other cities. The breeze skims the river’s surface, rippling the water before gently touching your skin. Look up, and you’ll see an open vista—no skyscrapers block the view. Pedal hard for a while, and you can leave all your worries behind. The wide-open grasslands and flowing waters cleanse the spirit.
The park also includes sports and leisure zones, such as the Integrity Culture Square, Cuiyun Stream, Fenshui Ancient Charm Square, and Jiuzhou Plaza—all worth a visit. Art and culture zones offer a chance to appreciate local creativity while you relax.
📍 Lingshi Cuifeng Park Route
Located in southeast Lingshi County, Cuifeng Park rises from the Fen River and Jingsheng River valleys. Though not particularly high, the hill stands impressively and is known as “Cuifeng Peak Scenery.” Starting from Luziping on the park’s south side, you can follow County Road 004 north, skirting the edge of the scenic area before entering the park itself.
This route is relatively flat, short, and close to the city—perfect for a family outing. On a sunny afternoon, bring your partner and children for a relaxing ride. Chat about school and life as you enjoy the gentle wind and warm sun.
Inside the park, the scenery is captivating. Take a break to capture photos and preserve the memory. With rich vegetation and autumn flowers like chrysanthemums, roses, and jasmine in bloom—there’s plenty to admire. When you tire of riding, take a stroll and appreciate the flowers, trees, architecture, and the company of those around you.
📍 Wutai Mountain Foothill Road
Wutai Mountain, also known as Mount Qingliang, lies in the northeastern part of Wutai County in Xinzhou. Early autumn brings particularly cool and pleasant weather here. While the steep, winding uphill roads are not suitable for cycling, the flat roads around the mountain’s base offer excellent riding with beautiful autumn views.
A recommended 7-km route begins south of Wutai Mountain in Youfangwan Village and follows County Road 128 west to Lingjing Township.
Cycling at the foot of Wutai Mountain, you’ll feel moist mountain air—reminiscent of southern China, but without the heat. You may encounter herds of cattle lounging or slowly crossing the road, gazing at you with innocent, long-lashed eyes. Wildflowers like multi-colored daisies and dandelions dot the roadside like scattered stars. Step off your bike, and you can smell their delicate fragrance.
Magpies often fly overhead, and the sky is a clear, brilliant blue. Clouds gather like folds in a gown, and sunlight breaks through in visible rays—a rare sight in the city.
Not far off, green mountains and forests cast mottled shadows on the grass. Ride slowly so you don’t miss the squirrels hopping at the forest’s edge or startle foxes foraging for food.
📍 Changzhi Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon Route
Located in southeastern Huguan County, the Taihang Grand Canyon spans 225 square kilometers along the eastern foothills of the South Taihang Range and ranks among China’s most beautiful canyons. While cycling inside the scenic area is not permitted, a well-developed road circles the perimeter, offering stunning views of the canyon.
One option is to start in Dongjingling Village and ride 12 km east along Provincial Road 327 to the tourist center. Experienced riders can extend the trip to the Heitongtan Zituan Tourist Center, then head west via Shifu Line to complete a full 45-km loop around the canyon.
Unlike the gentle Wutai Mountain route, this one impresses with its rugged grandeur. The area features three main gorges—Wuzhi, Wangmang, and Longquan—connecting over 400 scenic spots. Riding here, you’ll face steep cliffs and wide-open roads. Pedal hard, and the trees rush past as if the noise of the world is fading behind you.
A long ride like this can take you from sunrise to sunset. As dusk falls, switch your playlist to something mellow, and chase the autumn scenery and your own passion in the fading golden light.
One of the greatest joys of cycling is the chance to clear your mind and let your thoughts drift. Try slowing down and taking it all in—the line of cars at sunset, people strolling along the roadside, puddles after the rain, or the slow shift of clouds in the sky.
After a hot and humid summer, autumn’s crisp air feels like a reward. So call your family and friends, plan your route, and experience the joy and freedom of riding through Shanxi in early autumn.
