Madrid, Spain – The final stage of the 2024 Vuelta a España was abruptly canceled on Sunday after pro-Palestinian protesters blocked the 5.8-kilometer finishing circuit in central Madrid. The decision came following two separate interruptions during the stage, prompting race organizers to neutralize the race and call off the official awards ceremony.

The peloton was halted on two occasions within minutes as demonstrators broke through security barriers and occupied sections of the course approximately 200 meters from the finish line. After an initial five-minute pause, riders resumed under neutralized conditions behind the race director’s car, only to be stopped again shortly afterward. The stage was officially canceled shortly thereafter via race radio communication.
Television footage showed barriers and banners obstructing the road near the one-kilometer mark. Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma-Lease a Bike), who had secured overall victory prior to the final stage, was seen shaking hands with teammates near the team car in an anticlimactic conclusion to the three-week Grand Tour.
More than 2,000 police and civil guard officers had been deployed across the Spanish capital to ensure safety during the stage. Despite these measures, protesters managed to access the course at multiple points, leading to the unprecedented cancellation.
This incident marks the latest in a series of disruptions targeting the Vuelta due to the presence of Israel-Premier Tech, a team that has drawn repeated protests throughout the race. Previous stages—including the Stage 5 team time trial, Stage 11, and Stage 16—were also neutralized or altered due to demonstrations.
Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida described the day as “one of the saddest afternoons” in the city’s recent memory, condemning the protesters’ actions for forcing the cancellation.

Although the official ceremony was called off, riders later constructed an improvised podium near the team buses, celebrating their achievements in an informal yet heartfelt manner.
