The 2025 Around Shanghai · New City Cycling Race launched its Jiading stage on September 5 at the Shanghai International Circuit, drawing enthusiastic crowds as riders surged across the start line.
This year’s event upgraded to UCI 2.2 classification, becoming Shanghai’s first men’s road race in the UCI Asia Tour. The redesigned course introduced a multi-lap circuit format, keeping riders visible longer and intensifying competition.
“The new layout lets us see the athletes race past multiple times—it’s much more exciting to watch,” said spectator Ms. Li, echoing the general approval for the course changes.
The event attracted cycling fans from across the region. “This is completely different from watching the Tour de France on TV. You have to be here to feel the energy as the riders speed by,” said Mr. Zhou, a first-time attendee.
Amateur cyclist Ms. Huang traveled from Jiangsu to support her favorite riders and explore Jiading’s landmarks like Yuanxiang Lake and the Jiangnan Bookstore after the race.
Comprehensive safety measures supported the event, with police deploying along 30 key intersections and using drones for aerial monitoring. A mobile medical cluster stood ready with X-ray and surgical vehicles, ensuring full emergency coverage.
The race also boosted local business, with nearly 100 shops participating in promotions tied to the event, further integrating sports with culture, tourism, and commerce.
