First Things First: What Is Disc Wave?
Galfer isn’t your average brake brand. Born in Spain in 1952, they cut their teeth in moto racing before bringing that high-performance know-how to cycling. Their signature move? The Disc Wave—a rotor with a seriously cool wavy edge.
It’s not just for looks. That wave design:
Improves heat dissipation
Reduces weight
Delivers smoother engagement
Lowers noise and vibration
The Setup
We tested the 160mm Center Lock (well, quasi-center lock—more on that later) rotors on a road/gravel bike over six months. No floating bits here—just one solid, trusty piece of wavey goodness.
The Good Stuff ✅
1. Unbelievable Stability
This is the big one. Unlike some rotors that scream after sitting for a week, the Galfer stayed quiet and ready to roll, even after a month of neglect. No cleaning, no re-bedding, no fuss.
2. Beds In Super Fast
A quick ride and a few hard pulls were all it took to get full bite. The color change on the braking track says it all—it goes from shiny to seasoned in no time.
3. Braking Performance
Power is strong and consistent. We never experienced fade, even on long descents. It feels confident under heavy braking—no vague moments or surprises.
4. Lightweight
At just 95g, it’s light without sacrificing durability or stiffness.
A Few Quirks ⚠️
The early versions used a six-bolt-to-center-lock adapter. True center lock rotors are coming soon (Disc Shark series .
We had some very light rubbing at first with SRAM Red calipers. It disappeared after a short ride.
The blue-backed pads (road-specific) are great dry, but like most, they sing in the rain.
Wait, Pad Colors Mean Things?
Yep! Galfer uses color-coded brake pads:
Blue: High power, great for dry conditions
Red: Better wet weather performance
White: All-rounder
Purple: E-MTB specific
Yellow: Trail MTB
The Verdict
If you’re tired of maintaining fussy rotors or just want something that works day in, day out—the Galfer Disc Wave is a stellar pick. It’s reliable, fast-bedding, and built with real engineering chops.
We’re excited to try their new floating rotors soon, but for now, this one’s a keeper.
Rating: 9/10 – for riders who value reliability over flash.
Just make sure your calipers are aligned!
