Xiezigu National Forest Park: A Classic Cycling Climb Near Xingtai

Nestled in the central Taihang Mountains within Lincheng County, Xingtai City, Hebei Province, Xiezigu National Forest Park forms an integral part of the Lincheng National Geopark. The western section showcases the distinctive “Zhangshiyan” landform, while the eastern area features metamorphic rock peaks interwoven with Zhangshiyan formations, creating a landscape rich with canyons, unusual rock structures, and sharp ridges.

Located 27 kilometers west of Kongshan Cave, the park spans 50 square kilometers with forest coverage exceeding 90%. Its average summer temperature of 23°C (73°F) earns it the nickname “natural oxygen bar.” Experts praise the area for possessing “the lush beauty of southern China’s forests and rivers, combined with the cool summer climate of northern highlands,” calling it “the greenest part of the Taihang Mountains” and “a precious summer retreat.”

A Landscape of Geological Wonders

Most peaks within the park rise above 1,200 meters, with relative heights of 400-800 meters. Unique weathering processes have created remarkable formations, particularly in the western section where durable red quartz sandstone caps the mountains. This has resulted in the characteristic Zhangshiyan features—flat tops, steep cliffs, and gentle slopes—known locally as “Nao.” These formations include the golden palace-like Jinluandian Nao, the nine stone pillars of Shirenzhai resembling jade maidens, and the flat-topped Fang Nao.

The eastern part consists of shallow metamorphic sandstone, slate, and metamorphic andesite. Hard sandstone forms either towering peaks like the pyramid-shaped Jiushu Nao or sharp ridges like Dongda Liang, which stretches north-south with cliffs on both sides and features several prominent peaks.

The Ride: Two Challenging Routes

Cyclists can now enjoy a newly opened road from Sitai to Taoyuan Village, creating a demanding reverse climb option to the traditional route. This reverse climb measures 4 kilometers with a consistently challenging gradient. From the Jiunv Peak scenic area, head east through Tangjia Village to Taoyuan, where clear signage directs you toward Xiezigu. The climb from this direction provides a continuous, leg-burning ascent.

For those preferring the classic approach, the 12-kilometer main climb delivers a similarly rewarding challenge, guaranteed to get your heart pounding and legs burning.

Riders with more time can stay overnight in Shuangshipu Village within the park before heading north to explore the Zhangshiyan scenic area.

Seasonal Cycling Considerations

Spring and summer riding treats you to lush green mountains and clear waters, while autumn transforms the landscape into a breathtaking tapestry of red foliage. During summer months, remember to carry sufficient water and use sun protection to prevent heat exhaustion. For autumn rides, prepare with adequate layers for cooler temperatures.

You can find these routes by searching Xingtai Xiezigu Classic Climb in the Xiangzu cycling app.

Whether you tackle the classic 12-kilometer ascent or the shorter but steeper 4-kilometer reverse climb, Xiezigu promises an unforgettable cycling experience that tests your limits amid stunning natural scenery.
