The German bicycle market is showing encouraging momentum in the early months of 2025, with both production and sales posting notable gains in the first quarter.
Between January and March, bicycle sales in Germany increased by 11% year-over-year, reaching 885,000 units. Domestic production also grew significantly, rising 13.5% to 760,000 bicycles—520,000 of which were e-bikes.
Despite these positive figures, the German Bicycle Industry Association (ZIV) remains cautious. ZIV Managing Director Burkhard Stork noted that winter months are traditionally slow for the industry, making it too early to declare a full recovery. Preliminary data from April and May already indicate softer sales, and the association expects spring growth to settle around 5%.
The industry is still recovering from a sharp downturn following the pandemic boom. Bicycle sales fell from around 5 million units in 2022 to just 3.85 million last year, leading to high inventory levels and widespread discounting.
Still, Stork expressed cautious optimism: “We maintain our forecast of slight growth compared to the previous year, but the low point is behind us. From 2026 onward, we will see light at the end of the tunnel.”
