For generations, circling Hainan Island on two wheels has been more than a trip—it’s a rite of passage. While some choose to “lie flat,” others discover that true vitality comes from the rhythmic turn of pedals and the wind in your face.
A Legacy Forged by Pioneers
The tradition of cycling Hainan runs deep. In the late 1980s, a young entrepreneur, heartbroken and seeking solace, embarked on a solo ride around the island. His journey, fueled by the raw emotion of youth, became a formative experience.
He recalls a hotel manager in Yalong Bay, astonished that someone had cycled from Haikou, offering him a free stay. Later, encountering hunters with rifles who spoke of wild boars on the mountain roads, he faced his fear, realizing that “many obstacles are imagined.” He pressed on, discovering that success is a blend of courage, wisdom, and persistence.
This spirit defines the “pioneers” who came to Hainan—idealists chasing dreams with bravery and optimism. They found joy in the struggle itself.
Tracing the Tracks of History
This cycling tradition predates the modern “pioneers.” In 1932, a middle school teacher named Tian Shulan embarked on a groundbreaking solo bicycle tour of Hainan. For six months, he traversed the island on a single-speed bike, documenting its culture and landscapes in his book, “Travel Notes of Hainan Island.”
At the time, the island’s road system was in its infancy. Tian’s journey was a monumental feat of exploration, making him one of the first to truly document Hainan from the unique perspective of a bicycle. His work laid the foundation for what would become the island’s most intimate mode of travel.
The Modern Cycling Pilgrimage
Today, circling Hainan is no longer the logistical challenge it once was. With a comprehensive network of highways and the recent completion of the scenic Hainan Tourist Highway, the journey is more accessible than ever.
Yet, the essence remains. Each year, over 100,000 people complete the circuit, with 68% of them under 35. This isn’t a coincidence; it’s a growing movement. Cycling the island has evolved into a unique youth ritual—an active rejection of passivity and a powerful statement of exploration and perseverance.
More Than a Ride: A Rite of Passage
Cycling Hainan is a physical and mental reset. Research consistently shows that aerobic exercise, like cycling, is highly effective at alleviating anxiety and depression. The endorphins released during a ride create a natural sense of well-being, while the daily achievement of reaching a new destination helps rebuild a sense of control and accomplishment.
The island itself is the perfect companion. Its azure skies, sparkling seas, and swaying coconut groves provide a breathtaking backdrop for self-discovery. The journey offers a rhythm that city life often lacks—a chance to think, to breathe, and to connect with fellow travelers on the same path.
So, if you feel stuck, if you crave a real change, don’t just lie flat. Get on a bike. Propel yourself around Hainan Island and discover that the road ahead is far more exciting than any place you could ever stay still.
No ride, no true youth. And you haven’t truly been to Hainan until you’ve cycled around it.
