Honghua Lake Diary: After 17 Kilometers, I Understood Some Paths Are Meant to Be Traveled Alone

Recommended Route: Guangfu Road – Fubao Road – East Ring Lake Road – Chenggong – Jincheng – Kunyang – South Ring Lake Road – Haikou – Xishan – Haigeng Dam – Hongta East Road – Guangfu Road
Total Distance: Approximately 117 km (73 miles)

Dianchi Lake, also known as Kunming Lake, stands as Yunnan’s largest freshwater lake and ranks as China’s sixth largest freshwater body. The area boasts numerous scenic spots, facing the Xishan Forest Park and Daguan Park across the water, while connecting seamlessly with the Yunnan Ethnic Village.

Cyclists can enjoy the beautifully constructed Guanjing Road along Dianchi’s eastern shore, particularly popular during winter months when locals gather to feed black-headed gulls. The route also passes near the Yunnan Ethnic Village north of Haigeng Park, where visitors can experience the cultural diversity of Yunnan’s ethnic groups.

Notable Attractions Along the Route:

  • Kunming Western Hills: Ancient forests and exceptional views, traditionally known as the “Number One Scenic Spot in Central Yunnan”
  • Kunming Botanical Garden: Established in 1938, featuring subtropical plant diversity and seasonal displays
  • Golden Temple Park: A magnificent copper temple dating back to 1602, nestled within forested hills
  • Yunnan Wildlife Park: Spanning 500 acres within the Golden Temple National Forest Park

Erhai Lake, an alpine lake formed by subsidence of the Xi’er River, curves between the Cangshan Mountains and Dali Basin like a crescent moon. The crystal-clear waters encompass three islands, four continents, five lakes, and nine bends, earning its description as “flawless jade among mountains.”

The southern Tuanshan area features Erhai Park, offering exceptional views of the surrounding landscape. Cyclists can enjoy the picturesque scene of hazy waters against distant islands under brilliant blue skies.

Key Highlights:

  • Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple: Iconic Buddhist pagodas that have become a symbol of Dali
  • Butterfly Spring: A legendary site representing faithful love in Bai ethnic culture
  • Jinsuo Island: The largest island in Erhai, once a summer retreat for Nanzhao royalty

Riding Around Fuxian Lake

Recommended Route: Qianxing Road – East Ring Lake Road – Jinmapu – Follow S202 to Chengjiang County
Total Distance: Approximately 120 km (75 miles)

Fuxian Lake’s remarkably clear waters earned it the ancient name “Glazed Vastness.” The lake remains one of Yunnan’s least polluted water bodies, maintaining excellent water quality thanks to minimal environmental disruption in surrounding areas.

The deep waters support limited plant life primarily along the shoreline, while the lake holds several mysteries including a submerged ancient city yet to be fully explored due to the depth.

Nearby Points of Interest:

  • Jiulongchi Park: Features multiple natural springs and carefully designed pools
  • Xiushan Historical Park: Known for ancient architecture, rare trees, and extensive collection of inscribed tablets
  • World’s Highest Bridge: An engineering marvel with piers reaching 107 meters high

These cycling routes offer exceptional opportunities to experience Yunnan’s diverse landscapes, from urban lakeshores to remote mountain vistas, while exploring the region’s rich cultural heritage and natural wonders. Each route provides well-maintained roads and convenient facilities for cycling enthusiasts of all experience levels.
