The 2024 Gree-Tour of Guangxi World Tour race launched on October 15th with a thrilling sprint conclusion in Fangchenggang, where Lotto-Dstny’s young Belgian rider Lionel Taminiaux edged out competitors to claim the opening stage victory.
New Rider Takes Opening Honors
Taminiaux narrowly prevailed in a bunch sprint finish after the 147-kilometer coastal circuit race, immediately rewarding his Lotto-Dstny team’s decision to include him in their Tour of Guangxi roster. The 27-year-old’s victory marked a significant career achievement on the World Tour stage.
The Belgian sprinter’s performance earned him dual honors – both the overall leader’s Gree Red Jersey and the sprint classification’s Wanda Hotels & Resorts Blue Jersey. “This is exactly the start we hoped for,” Taminiaux commented after the podium ceremony. “The team executed our plan perfectly today, and to wear two jerseys is beyond expectations.”
Additional Jersey Winners Emerge
Israel-Premier Tech’s Ethan Vernon captured the Li-Ning White Jersey as best young rider, while Decathlon AG2R’s Stan Dewulf received the stage’s combativity award for his aggressive riding in the day’s main breakaway.
The opening stage maintained a rapid pace throughout, with several teams attempting to control the peloton ahead of the anticipated sprint finish. While multiple breakaway attempts emerged during the coastal circuits, the flat terrain ultimately favored the sprinters’ teams.
Redesigned Course Promises Drama
This year’s Tour of Guangxi features a completely redesigned route spanning six cities across China’s Guangxi region. The revised course reduces flat sections in favor of more mountainous terrain, potentially reshaping the general classification battle.
Race director Wei He emphasized how the new route “showcases southwestern Guangxi’s stunning landscapes while creating more dynamic racing.” The changes particularly benefit climbers, with organizers deliberately designing stages that favor aggressive racing rather than conservative tactics.
World’s Best Teams Return to China
The six-day event brings the World Tour back to China for the first time since 2019, featuring all 16 UCI WorldTeams plus three invited squads. The star-studded field includes UAE Team Emirates, Visma-Lease a Bike, and Soudal Quick-Step – currently the world’s top three ranked teams.
The Chinese National Team makes its second consecutive appearance, building on last year’s breakthrough performance where Chinese riders achieved their best-ever World Tour stage results.
Stage Two Presents New Challenges
Riders face an immediate increase in difficulty during Tuesday’s 181.5-kilometer stage from Chongzuo to Jingxi. The route features two intermediate sprints and two category-three climbs, offering opportunities for breakaway specialists and testing the peloton’s early season fitness.
The Tour of Guangxi continues through October 20th, culminating with a women’s World Tour event in Nanning. With the new course design already creating racing uncertainty, the battle for the leader’s jersey appears wide open as the race heads into Guangxi’s mountainous interior.
