Stage 19 of the 2025 Vuelta a España, a 181.3km ride through the rolling hills of northwestern Spain, offered a final opportunity for the sprinters before the race’s decisive GC battles. With only one intermediate sprint on the route, a bunch finish was widely anticipated.
Shortly after the start, Otger Roura (Team Caja Rural–Seguros RGA) launched a solo breakaway and built a small advantage. The peloton showed little urgency, allowing him to claim the intermediate sprint and a 6-second time bonus.
The real surprise came when Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) attacked shortly after to seize the remaining 4 bonus seconds—extending his overall lead to 44 seconds. “It feels good to stay aggressive. It’s a positive sign for tomorrow,” Vingegaard commented after the stage.
Inside the final 3km, the GC teams moved aside as Ineos Grenadiers and Movistar took over at the front, driving a fast and fractured pace into the finishing circuit.
Alpecin-Deceuninck timed their effort to perfection, moving to the front in the final kilometer and delivering Jasper Philipsen into the last 200 meters. Well-protected and perfectly positioned, Philipsen powered over a shallow rise and launched his sprint early, holding off all challengers to take his third stage win at this year’s Vuelta.
