TREK100 & Chongming Island Road Cycling Open Kicks Off in Shanghai

In a vibrant celebration of cycling and community, the 2025 Shanghai City Amateur League “smart Cup” TREK100 and Chongming Island Road Cycling Open commenced on October 12th. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Chongming—a world-class ecological island—the event attracted nearly 2,000 cyclists who gathered to ride a 108.6-kilometer elite route, the same course to be used in the upcoming UCI Women’s WorldTour race.

Riders set off from Xincheng Park on Chongming Avenue as the morning sun rose, embarking on a journey through lush wetlands, serene lakes, and vibrant flower fields. The fully closed professional route offered participants a rare opportunity to experience the same challenges faced by top-tier athletes.

Riding the WorldTour Route

A major highlight of this year’s TREK100 was its alignment with the UCI Women’s WorldTour race, scheduled for October 14–16. As the only multi-stage Women’s WorldTour event in China, the Chongming Island Tour shares the same 2.WWT status as the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and Vuelta a España.

Participants in the TREK100 enjoyed a preview of the WorldTour’s opening stage—a 108.6-kilometer western loop of Chongming Island. Organized with WorldTour-level support, the event featured over 10,000 volunteers and premium services. Riders also had the chance to win prizes, including a Trek Madone road bike.

More Than a Race: Community, Health, and Charity

Integrated into the Shanghai City Amateur League, the TREK100 emphasizes participation and wellness over pure competition. Originating in the United States in 1990, the TREK100 series has grown into a globally recognized cycling tradition, uniting half a million participants over the years. Since its introduction to China in 2016, the event has expanded to multiple cities, promoting cycling culture and active lifestyles.

True to its charitable roots, the event continued its partnership with the Shanghai Sports Development Foundation. A donation of RMB 100,000 was presented during the opening ceremony to support youth sports development and programs for special needs communities. For 36 years, the TREK100 has blended sport with social responsibility, inspiring riders to pedal for a purpose.

Seamless Organization and Local Impact

The event was organized with professional precision. Road closures were coordinated by Shanghai police with minimal public disruption, and medical teams followed international safety standards. Local hotels offered special rates for participants, helping boost regional tourism and economy.

The race also featured appearances by professional riders from the LIDL-TREK Women’s Pro Team, who are competing in the Women’s WorldTour event. They joined participants for pre-race meet-ups and post-ride interactions—signing autographs, sharing tips, and inspiring amateurs with their world-class presence.

The 2025 TREK100 Chongming Island Open not only highlighted the island’s natural beauty and world-class cycling infrastructure but also reinforced the power of cycling to bring people together—for sport, for health, and for good.
